The typical advice is to start with the Barsetshire series. It's not so much a linear series as just 6 novels set in more or less the same place. I believe the first one is The Warden. I've read 30+ of the 47 novels, and with 1 or 2 exceptions, can honestly say that I love them all and was well entertained. 💖📚
Great, thank you! I can't say I'll likely get to it soon — I'm sure you know how it is with the to-read pile — but your advice has definitely bumped Trollope nearer to the top.
Ha ha, but seriously, if you haven't read any Trollope, you might give him a try. He can be funny at times. Not exactly knee slapping, more of a quiet smile to yourself, or an ingrin as some people like to say.
Thank you, Katy. I had a lot of fun writing this, and I think it comes through. But I'm also realising now that I glibly confessed to my readers that I haven't read Trollope, not realising what a stain this is on anything like a reputation I might've had! I'll be keeping an eye out now for his stuff next bookshop I'm in...
Ah, now, brother, it looks like we may have words. Catch-22 is a book I have tried and failed to read the whole way through... three times! To this day, I’m still not entirety sure why. I just don’t seem to be able to get on with it. It’s not that it’s not funny. I remember laughing (at parts). But it has remained unreadable for me. I don’t disagree with you lightly, but I think I’m right that our nascent friendship will benefit from some disagreement. And, knowing you, you’ll probably provoke me into giving it a reread, or trying to, anyway.
I love a little friendly disagreement — Christopher Hitchens said something about seeking out good arguments because the grave supplies plenty of time for silence. If you ever work out what it is that doesn't work for you in Catch-22 I'd love to hear it; you probably won't shake off my love of the book, but you're interesting and articulate in a way that would make it a guaranteed joy to hear (and bicker with) your thoughts. In any case, I've discovered I have no grounds on which to condemn anyone for not loving Catch-22, because I don't yet love Anthony Trollope. I had no idea he had such a fanbase among my readers!
Yes! “The grave will supply plenty of time for silence” (if memory serves!). I will consider a reread of Catch-22 and you will be the first to know if (when) I write about it. And don’t worry - I don’t love Trollope yet either.

Cool 😎. Happy reading 💐.

I still haven't read any Trollope, but I'm not as averse to the idea as I was way back when. Any of his books you'd suggest starting with?
I enjoyed this so much! It's wonderful that you share your love of books with your father. But what I would give for that box of Trollopes! :)

It's not a stain with me. I haven't read Catch 22! But I would encourage you to at least try him. I would start with The Warden.
That's two votes for The Warden now as my first book...
